How often should my radiator be serviced?

Preventative maintenance is the number one way to save money over the lifespan of your vehicle. One aspect of preventative maintenance that customers often ask about is radiator upkeep. There are certain steps you can take to help maintain a properly functioning radiator. Understanding more about the radiator itself and a few basic tips can save you time, money and a big headache in the future.

Here are a few tips to keep your radiator from falling in to disrepair.

  • Keep your coolant filled to the proper level at all times. Some coolant requires a 50/50 mix with water. Some coolant comes pre-diluted and can be added as is. Make sure you know what type of coolant you purchased.
  • Screw your radiator cap down tight. If it’s off or loose, it will not pressurize the coolant chamber correctly.
  • Have your radiator cleaned and inspected twice a year. Make sure to mention it to your shop of choice whenever you bring your vehicle in for an oil change or tire rotation.
  • Have your radiator flushed and filled on at least once a year. This is another service you can have done by your local trusted technician.

If you can’t remember the last time your radiator was serviced, give us a call at 503-253-1747 and we’ll take a look. Then we can get you on a regular maintenance plan to make sure that your radiator is serviced regularly, along with all your vehicles other moving parts!
